Chapter 41

The sheer magnitude of the legal war Lily was preparing to wage against Victor Thorne required an immense amount of emotional fortitude. As the date for the preliminary hearings approached, the psychological pressure of holding Rosa's fragile future in her hands began to feel incredibly heavy.
Late on a Friday evening, Lily sat on the floor of her quiet, empty apartment. The city lights outside her window cast long, geometric shadows across the hardwood floor. She looked at the windowsill, where the elegant silver picture frame caught the ambient light.
You were always full of fire. Go light up the world.
Lily picked up her phone and dialed a number she knew by heart. It rang twice before a familiar, warm voice answered.
"Hello, counselor," Emma said, her voice instantly bringing a profound sense of safety into the quiet apartment. "Are you taking a break, or are you calling me from the law library again?"
"I'm at home," Lily smiled, leaning back against the wall. "But the case is in my head. Emma, I'm going up against a man who has millions of dollars and a team of ruthless lawyers. I have the evidence, I have the strategy, but the closer we get to the hearing, the more I realize how much is at stake. If I fail, Rosa loses her children."
There was a quiet, deeply understanding pause on the other end of the line.
"You are feeling the weight of the shield," Emma observed softly. "It is heavy, Lily. It is supposed to be heavy. If it were light, everyone would carry it."
"How did you do it?" Lily asked, her voice dropping to a vulnerable whisper. "When you were standing in the dark, facing the monsters... how did you stop your hands from shaking?"
"I didn't stop them from shaking," Emma answered honestly. "Courage isn't the absence of fear, sweetheart. Courage is letting your hands shake, and doing the right thing anyway. Victor Thorne expects you to be intimidated by his wealth. He expects you to fold under the pressure. You don't have to be fearless. You just have to be relentless."
Lily looked at the picture frame again, feeling a surge of profound, unshakeable strength rise from the deepest parts of her soul.

"I am going to tear his empire down," Lily promised, her voice returning to its solid, immovable register.
"I know you will," Emma replied warmly. "Give him hell, Lily."
