Chapter 31

Summer break brought Lily back to the Callahan estate. The house was vibrant, filled with the sounds of Emma’s mother cooking in the kitchen and Grant conducting quiet advisory calls in the garden. Lily spent her days interning at a local legal aid clinic, helping draft restraining orders and navigating the complex bureaucracy of family court for low-income clients.
One evening, she sat on the back patio with Emma, watching the fireflies dance over the manicured lawn. The heavy, oppressive heat of the day had broken, leaving a cool, comfortable breeze.
"I reviewed the case file for a woman today," Lily said, tracing the rim of her iced tea glass. "She doesn't speak English well. Her husband convinced her that if she left him, the courts would take her children because of the language barrier. He used her isolation as a weapon."
Emma nodded slowly, understanding the tragic familiarity of the tactic. "What did you do?"
"I found a certified translator. We sat in a room for three hours. I told her exactly what the law says, not what her husband told her it says. We filed the emergency custody petition this afternoon."
"You gave her the truth," Emma said proudly.
"I gave her a vocabulary," Lily corrected gently. "The fear is so much worse when you don't have the words to describe what is happening to you. When Renata was burning me, I didn't know how to explain it. I didn't know the word 'abuse.' I just knew the smell of the smoke."
Emma reached out and gently touched the scar above Lily’s ear. It was faded now, a pale line against her skin.

"You found the words, Lily. You found 'she burned me'."
"And you listened," Lily smiled, leaning her head against Emma’s shoulder. "That’s all anyone really needs. Just one person brave enough to listen."
