Chapter 36

|

The architecture of the law school was deliberately intimidating, a sprawling complex of gothic stone and heavy oak doors designed to make first-year students feel incredibly small. Lily stood in the center of the main courtyard, her heavy canvas backpack slung over one shoulder, looking up at the towering spires. The autumn wind was crisp, carrying the scent of turning leaves and old parchment. It was a place built on tradition, power, and the absolute authority of the written word.

She took a deep breath, letting the cold air fill her lungs. She had survived far more terrifying environments than a prestigious academic institution. She walked into the grand foyer, her footsteps echoing on the polished marble floor. The space was alive with the chaotic, nervous energy of hundreds of new students, all holding thick, expensive textbooks and speaking in hushed, anxious tones.

Lily found her locker, a narrow metal space in a long, dimly lit corridor. As she was organizing her heavy casebooks for Torts and Criminal Law, a tall young man with messy brown hair and a friendly, exhausted smile leaned against the locker next to hers.

"I'm already three chapters behind, and classes haven't even officially started yet," the young man said, offering a self-deprecating laugh.

"The reading list is definitely aggressive," Lily agreed, offering a polite smile.

"I'm Caleb," he said, extending his hand. "I'm hoping to survive until Thanksgiving. What about you?"

"I'm Lily," she replied, shaking his hand firmly. "And I'm planning on surviving the entire three years."

"You have that look," Caleb noted, his expression turning slightly more serious as he studied her calm demeanor. "Most people here are terrified. You look like you've seen worse things than a syllabus."

"I have," Lily said simply, her voice steady and completely devoid of arrogance. "I'm here to learn how to dismantle them."

Caleb nodded slowly, recognizing the quiet, immovable strength radiating from her. They walked toward their first lecture hall together, the massive wooden doors looming ahead. Lily pushed them open, stepping confidently into the vast, tiered classroom. She was not a victim seeking shelter; she was a warrior stepping onto a new battlefield, entirely ready for the war.
