The transition from the theoretical debates of the first year to the grueling, practical reality of the second year was brutal for most students, but for Lily, it was a profound awakening. She immediately applied for and was accepted into the university’s premier Legal Advocacy Clinic, a program dedicated to representing indigent clients facing extreme domestic and systemic abuse.
The clinic was housed in a dilapidated brick building on the edge of campus, smelling faintly of stale coffee, old paper, and desperation. It lacked the polished mahogany and pristine marble of the main law school, but to Lily, it felt exactly like the sanctuaries Emma and Grant had built. It was a place where real battles were fought.
The clinic director, Professor Hayes, was a hardened, fiercely compassionate woman who had spent thirty years fighting in the trenches of family court. She called Lily into her small, cramped office on the first day of the semester.
"I reviewed your academic file, Lily," Professor Hayes said, peering over her reading glasses. "You have the highest grades in your cohort. You could have taken a comfortable externship at a corporate firm downtown. Why are you here?"
"Corporate firms protect money," Lily answered evenly, taking a seat across from the chaotic desk. "I am here to protect people."
Professor Hayes studied her for a moment, recognizing the steel behind Lily's calm exterior. She reached into a massive stack of manila folders, pulled one out, and slid it across the desk.
"Her name is Rosa Martinez," Professor Hayes said, her voice dropping into a serious, clinical register. "She is thirty-two years old, a mother of two. Her ex-husband is Victor Thorne, a highly connected, incredibly wealthy real estate developer in the city. He has weaponized the legal system against her, burying her in frivolous custody motions to drain her finances and force her to surrender the children."
Lily opened the file. The pages were filled with horrifying accounts of psychological abuse, financial control, and endless legal intimidation.
"He is using his wealth as a bludgeon," Lily noted, her jaw tightening as she read the familiar tactics of a predator.

"He is," Professor Hayes confirmed. "And his lawyers are ruthless. They have already broken two junior attorneys who tried to represent Rosa. Are you ready for a war, Lily?"
"I was born in one," Lily said, closing the file and standing up. "I'll take the case."
