Chapter 48

|

The fallout from the deposition was instantaneous and catastrophic for Victor Thorne. Realizing that a federal judge would absolutely obliterate his client based on the transcript containing perjury, financial fraud, and physical intimidation, Marcus Sterling immediately shifted from aggressive litigation to desperate damage control.

Two days later, Lily sat in the clinic’s interview room with Rosa. The air in the room was heavy, thick with the terrifying reality of the choice they now faced.

"They sent a settlement offer this morning," Lily explained, sliding a dense legal document across the table toward Rosa. "Sterling is terrified of this going to open court. Victor is offering a one-time, lump-sum payment of five million dollars in back child support, and he will legally surrender all custody rights to the children."

Rosa stared at the document, her hands trembling violently. "Five million dollars? And he walks away? He leaves us alone forever?"

"Yes," Lily confirmed softly. "It is enough money to secure your future, Rosa. You could buy a house, put the kids through college, and never have to worry about him financially starving you again."

"But?" Rosa asked, looking up and catching the subtle, heavy reservation in Lily's eyes.

"But," Lily sighed, tapping a specific clause buried on the third page of the settlement. "It comes with an ironclad, lifetime Non-Disclosure Agreement. If you sign this, you can never speak about the abuse. You can never warn anyone else about what Victor Thorne really is. The financial fraud, the intimidation, the violence... it all gets buried forever. He buys his absolute innocence."

Rosa looked down at her hands, the weight of the moral dilemma crushing her. She had spent years silenced by fear; now, she was being asked to silence herself for security.

"What would you do, Lily?" Rosa whispered, her eyes filled with tears. "You fought so hard to uncover the truth. If I sign this, I bury all your hard work. But I am so tired of fighting."

"Rosa, my job is to be your shield, not your conscience," Lily answered, her voice incredibly gentle and free of judgment. "There is no shame in taking the settlement to protect your children. Survival is paramount. But you have to ask yourself... can you live with the silence?"
