Chapter 50

|

The courtroom was a theater of heavy oak, polished brass, and the solemn authority of the state. Judge Eleanor Vance, a seasoned family court magistrate with a reputation for zero tolerance regarding corporate obfuscation, presided over the bench.

Victor Thorne sat rigidly at the respondent's table, his usual arrogant demeanor replaced by a pale, sweating tension. He knew the trap he was walking into, but without the NDA, he had no choice but to face the music.

Lily stood at the petitioner's podium. She did not look like a law student. She wore a perfectly tailored navy suit, her posture immaculate, projecting the quiet, lethal confidence of a veteran litigator.

"Your Honor," Lily began, her voice ringing clearly through the silent courtroom during her opening statement. "This case is not simply a matter of a disputed child support modification. This is a case of systemic, premeditated financial and psychological abuse. The respondent, Victor Thorne, has weaponized his vast corporate wealth to intentionally starve his children and terrorize his ex-wife."

"Objection, Your Honor," Sterling interrupted weakly. "Counsel is using inflammatory rhetoric."

"Overruled," Judge Vance stated sharply. "I have read the preliminary briefs, Mr. Sterling. The rhetoric seems entirely proportional to the allegations. Proceed, Ms. Vance."

"We will prove today, through undeniable forensic accounting, that Mr. Thorne committed perjury when he declared his businesses bankrupt," Lily continued, locking eyes with the judge. "We will prove that he actively concealed millions of dollars in offshore accounts to avoid his legal obligations to his family. And we will prove that when we attempted to uncover this truth, Mr. Thorne used a private security firm to physically stalk and intimidate opposing counsel."

A low murmur rippled through the gallery. Judge Vance’s eyes narrowed significantly, turning her fierce gaze toward the respondent's table.

"Those are incredibly severe allegations, Ms. Vance," the judge warned, leaning forward. "You had better have the paper trail to back them up."

"I have the paper trail, Your Honor," Lily promised, lifting the thick binder of evidence. "And I have the deposition transcript where Mr. Thorne admits to the intimidation on the record. We are ready to call our first witness."
