Chapter 32

|

Grant’s transition from ruthless corporate chairman to term-limited adviser was not without friction. A faction of the old board members, remnants of Victor’s era, constantly pushed back against Grant’s insistence on ethical compliance and worker protections. They viewed him as a man who had gone soft, a titan who had lost his edge.

During a tense quarterly review, a senior board member named Thomas finally challenged Grant directly.

"You are costing us millions in potential acquisitions because of these exhaustive ethical reviews, Grant," Thomas snapped, tossing a financial report onto the mahogany table. "We are a corporation, not a morality police force. Victor never let compliance stand in the way of market dominance."

Grant looked at Thomas with an expression of absolute, terrifying calm. He had not gone soft; he had simply redirected his lethality.

"Victor is dead, Thomas. And he died trying to cover up the crimes that his 'market dominance' culture allowed to fester," Grant said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "You think ethical compliance is a weakness. I know it is armor. Every dollar you think you are saving by ignoring abuse will cost you ten when the federal subpoenas arrive."

"The shareholders want aggressive growth!" Thomas argued.

"The shareholders want stability," Grant countered. "If you attempt to bypass the compliance protocols I established, I will not simply advise against it. I will personally trigger a federal audit of your specific portfolios. I will ensure every backroom deal you have ever orchestrated is dragged into the public light."

Thomas paled, his bluster evaporating instantly. He knew Grant Callahan possessed enough institutional knowledge to destroy him completely.

"Are we clear?" Grant asked.

"We are clear," Thomas mumbled.

Grant closed his folder. He had surrendered his absolute power, but he had never surrendered his capacity to protect.
