Chapter 33

|

The graduation ceremony was held on the university’s massive green lawn under a brilliant, cloudless sky. Lily wore a black cap and gown, her honors cords draped heavily over her shoulders. She had graduated summa cum laude, with dual degrees in psychology and pre-law. Emma and Grant sat in the front row of the guest section, holding a massive bouquet of yellow roses.

When the dean called Lily’s name, the applause was loud and genuine. She walked across the stage with perfect posture, accepting her diploma with a bright, unburdened smile. She did not look like a victim who had survived a tragedy; she looked like a sovereign woman ready to conquer the world.

After the ceremony, they gathered near the old campus clock tower for photographs.

"I am incredibly proud of you," Grant said, handing her the yellow roses. "Your mother would have been so proud."

It was a rare mention of Claire. Ten years ago, the memory of Claire had been a weapon used to manipulate them both. Now, it was simply a beautiful, peaceful acknowledgment of the past.

"Thank you, Dad," Lily said, hugging him tightly.

Emma stood back, taking a picture of the two of them. She smiled, feeling a profound sense of completion. The terrified little girl she had found in a smoke-filled bathroom was officially gone.

"What happens next?" Emma asked as Lily walked over to hug her.

"Law school in the fall," Lily answered, her eyes shining with determination. "But for the next two months, absolutely nothing. I want to sleep in, read terrible fiction novels, and eat strawberry cake in the kitchen."

"I think that can be arranged," Emma laughed, linking her arm through Lily's. "Let's go home."
