Chapter 23

|

The winter semester brought a new challenge for Lily. She was assigned a collaborative research project in her psychology seminar, requiring her to partner with a senior named David. They met in the campus library on a freezing Tuesday evening to divide the workload. David was intense, highly ambitious, and clearly intended to dominate the project.

"I'll handle the theoretical framework and the data analysis," David said, sliding a typed outline across the table. "You can format the citations and write the conclusion. That’s usually easier for freshmen."

Lily looked at the outline. It completely marginalized her role. Ten years ago, she would have accepted the paper and remained perfectly silent, allowing an older, more confident person to dictate her actions.

She placed her hand flat on the paper and slid it back across the table.

"No," Lily said, her voice calm and absolute.

David blinked, clearly caught off guard. "Excuse me?"

"I am not formatting citations while you write the core of the paper," Lily explained, looking directly into his eyes. "This is a collaborative project. We will split the theoretical framework and the data analysis equally. I will write the introduction, you can write the conclusion, and we will format our own citations."

"Look, I just want to make sure the grade is protected," David said defensively. "I'm applying to grad school."

"So am I," Lily replied without breaking eye contact. "My academic record is flawless. I am entirely capable of writing a graduate-level analysis. We divide it equally, or I request a new partner from the professor tomorrow morning."

David stared at her for a long moment, realizing she was completely immovable. He sighed, pulling a pen from his bag.

"Fine. Let's look at the theoretical framework together," he conceded.

Lily opened her laptop. She had found her voice, and she refused to let anyone diminish it ever again.
