Chapter 5 - Code Blue

|

I shattered the glass of the security doors with the base of a heavy fire extinguisher I grabbed off the wall.

Alarms instantly blared, bathing the sterile white corridors in a flashing, panicked red light. Nurses screamed and dove out of the way as I tore down the hallway toward Room 412.

“Security!” someone yelled.

I ignored them. I reached Clara’s room and slammed the door open.

Dr. Evans was standing over her bed.

In his right hand, he held a syringe filled with a cloudy, unmarked liquid. He was hovering over Clara’s IV line, the needle just millimeters from the access port.

“Stop!” I roared, launching myself across the room.

The surgeon gasped and tried to plunge the syringe, but I caught his wrist. I twisted his arm violently behind his back, forcing him to drop the needle. It clattered harmlessly onto the linoleum floor.

I shoved him hard against the medical monitors.

“What is in that syringe?!” I demanded, pinning him by his throat.

“Potassium!” he choked out, his face turning purple. “It stops the heart! It looks like cardiac arrest!”

My blood turned to ice. They were going to make it look like a tragic medical complication. They were going to murder my wife and the mother of my dead child, and walk away clean.

The hospital security guards burst into the room, their hands on their weapons.

“Let him go, sir!” the lead guard shouted.

Before I could respond, four men in immaculate black suits materialized behind the guards. My men.

The leader of my detail flashed a federal badge that didn't technically exist.

“This floor is now under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense,” my man said smoothly. “Clear the room.”
