Chapter 19 - The Rebuilding

Six months later, Clara and I left the city.
We moved to a secluded, fortress-like estate on a private island I owned in the Mediterranean. It was a place surrounded by crystal-blue waters, lush gardens, and impenetrable security.
Clara began to heal.
She painted in the sunroom, walked along the private beach, and slowly learned how to smile again. The grief of losing our baby was a shadow that followed us, but it no longer consumed us.
We planted an olive tree in the center of the courtyard in memory of the child we never met. Every morning, Clara would sit by it, tracing the bark with her fingers.
I shifted my operations, running my global empire from the island, refusing to ever leave her side again.
“You don't have to hover, Adrian,” Clara told me one afternoon, laughing softly as I wrapped a blanket around her shoulders on the patio.
“I will hover for the rest of our lives,” I replied, kissing the top of her head.
She leaned into my chest, watching the sunset over the ocean.
“I feel safe here,” she murmured. “For the first time in my life, I don't feel like I'm looking over my shoulder.”
I held her tightly, promising myself that nothing would ever break this peace. I had burned down the world to protect her, and I would do it a thousand times over if I had to.
Later that evening, while Clara was asleep, I retreated to my secure office to review the daily intelligence briefings.
