Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

Richard’s face was chalk-white. His eight sons looked at me not as a brother-in-law, but as an apex predator they had foolishly cornered.
Before Richard could formulate a response, my phone vibrated in my palm.
It was an automated security report from my private intelligence team, the men I had stationed outside the hospital the moment I got the call.
I opened the file, expecting visual confirmation that Clara's attackers had been officially identified and tagged for surveillance.
Instead, a high-definition video file loaded on my screen.
It was hospital surveillance footage from a restricted back corridor, time-stamped two hours earlier.
The video showed Vincent, Clara’s eldest brother, cornering a man in green surgical scrubs.
It was Dr. Evans. The trauma surgeon who had just told me my wife was stable.
In the video, Vincent looked around nervously before pulling a thick, unmarked white envelope from his jacket. He shoved it into the surgeon’s hands. Dr. Evans hesitated for a fraction of a second before slipping the envelope into his pocket and nodding grimly.
My eyes snapped away from the screen and lifted toward the ICU double doors.
The surgeon had told me Clara was stable. He had told me she just needed rest.
But suddenly, I wasn't sure that was true.
Because the attack on my wife hadn't ended when they dumped her bleeding body at the hospital entrance.
They had paid the doctor to finish the job.
“You didn’t just beat her,” I whispered, my voice echoing in the dead silence of the hallway. “You paid for an execution.”
May you like
Vincent stumbled backward, realizing I knew.
I didn't wait for a confession. I turned and sprinted toward the ICU doors.
