Chapter 1 - The Midnight Call

|

The hospital called me at 12:17 a.m.

“Your wife survived.”

Survived.

I drove through the rain-slicked streets of the city with those words repeating on a loop in my head. The windshield wipers beat a frantic rhythm, but all I could hear was the clinical, detached tone of the nurse.

When I finally reached the ICU, I saw Clara.

My breath caught in my throat. Her beautiful face was swollen beyond recognition. Her left shoulder was visibly deformed, fractured from a blunt impact. Deep, ugly purple bruises covered her delicate arms.

Machines beeped in a chaotic symphony, surrounding the woman who had kissed me goodbye that morning with a bright, hopeful smile.

Her hand, pale and trembling, rested protectively over her stomach.

The trauma surgeon stepped out of the room and quietly closed the glass door. He wouldn't meet my eyes.

“Three broken ribs. Severe internal bleeding. A fractured collarbone.”

He paused, taking a deep, shuddering breath.

“We couldn't save the baby.”

Something inside my chest snapped. A cold, absolute void replaced my heart.

“How many people attacked her?” I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.

“The paramedics said... at least nine men.”

I closed my eyes. I already knew their names.

Clara had been raised by a father who considered obedience a currency more valuable than love, and eight brothers who treated his cruelty like absolute law. They had hated our marriage from the beginning. They despised that Clara chose me over their arranged political alliances.

Tonight, they had finally punished her for refusing to leave me.

I turned away from the glass. I had a family to destroy.
