Chapter 2 - The Hallway of Monsters

I walked into the sterile, brightly lit hallway of the hospital waiting area.
All nine of them were there.
They weren't pacing. They weren't worried.
They were laughing.
They stood around a vending machine, drinking bad coffee and joking as if they had just finished a casual game of golf, not beaten a pregnant woman within an inch of her life.
Vincent, the eldest brother, saw me first. He crushed a paper cup in his hand and smirked.
“Look who decided to show up,” Vincent said loudly. “Maybe next time you'll learn how to control your wife, Adrian.”
Another brother, Marcus, let out a harsh laugh.
“She tripped on the stairs,” Marcus mocked. “Clumsy girl. Always was.”
Her father, Richard, stepped out from the center of the pack. He was a tall man, impeccably dressed in a tailored suit, reeking of old money and misplaced arrogance.
He stepped closer to me, looking down his nose.
“You've got money, Adrian,” Richard said, his voice dripping with condescension. “Don't confuse that with power. In this city, blood dictates the rules. We are the rules. Now take your broken wife and leave our affairs alone.”
For six years, I had allowed them to believe exactly that.
Clara knew I owned a portfolio of successful companies.
She didn't know why senators returned my calls before their own mega-donors did. She didn't know why men who controlled global shipping ports, international banks, and private military contractors called me for permission before making major decisions.

I had hidden my true world to protect her innocence.
Looking at the monsters laughing in this hallway, that secrecy felt like the greatest mistake of my life.
