Chapter 7 - Leaving the Ruins

|

Grant stared at the green checkmark on my screen, his eyes wide with absolute horror.

Chloe grabbed his arm frantically.

“Grant... what does this mean? Are we still rich? Tell me we’re still rich!”

Grant roughly shoved her arm off him. “Shut up! Just shut up, Chloe!”

I collected my clutch, took a breath, and looked Grant up and down one last time.

“You told me I would leave this marriage with nothing,” I said softly, my voice cutting through his panic. “You should have realized that without me, you’re just a man with a heavy surname and an empty bank account.”

I turned my back on them both and began walking toward the grand double doors of the ballroom.

The crowd of Manhattan elite parted before me like the Red Sea. No one dared to stop me. No one dared to speak. The only sound was the rhythmic clicking of my designer heels echoing against the polished floor.

Behind me, I could hear Grant yelling at the top of his lungs, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.

“Evelyn! Come back here! You can’t do this to me! EVELYN!”

I didn't turn around. I didn't glance back at the broken glass, the crying mistress, or the husband whose empire I had just dismantled in ten minutes.

As I reached the grand marble staircase leading down to the hotel lobby, my phone buzzed in my hand. A single text message appeared on the screen from an unlisted number.

The car is waiting at the side entrance. Step inside whenever you’re ready, Mrs. Mercer.

I smiled quietly, slipping the phone back into my purse, and walked out into the cool Manhattan night.
