Chapter 5 - The Phone Call

|

Grant took three rapid steps toward me, his hands clenched into tight fists.

“Evelyn! Don't you dare!”

I paid him no attention, keeping my focus entirely on the phone.

“You said I would leave with nothing, Grant,” I remarked coolly. “I’m just taking what’s mine before you drag it down with you.”

“Those shares belong to the Mercer family!” he shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria.

“No,” I corrected him softly. “They belong to the Evelyn Bennett Mercer Revocable Trust. Legally, physically, and permanently.”

“My father gave them to you to hold in trust for the family!”

“Your father gave them to me because he knew you were an idiot who would run this firm into the ground the moment a pretty girl smiled at you.”

Chloe lowered her swollen hands, staring at Grant in absolute confusion.

“Grant... what is she talking about? What shares?”

Grant didn't answer her. He looked as if all the oxygen had been sucked out of his lungs.

I turned to Chloe with a cold smile.

“Fifty-two percent of the voting power, Chloe. The portion that allows the holder to hire and fire the Chief Executive Officer at will. Which means Grant doesn't own Mercer Dominion. I do.”

Her mouth fell open in total shock. Her eyes flicked from me to Grant, watching his pale, trembling reaction.

Martin’s voice spoke up from the phone again, loud and clear over the ballroom speakers.

“Evelyn, as per the contingency protocol we established this afternoon, I already have two institutional buyers locked in and waiting.”

Grant’s head snapped toward Chloe.

“What contingency protocol? What afternoon? What is he talking about?!”

I tilted my head, looking directly at the crying mistress.

“Ask her, Grant.”

Chloe recoiled, taking a step back.

“She sent me a text message at 2:16 p.m. today,” I explained to the entire room. “It contained a lovely photo of her ultrasound and a note saying: ‘Grant is finally choosing me tonight. Don’t embarrass yourself by fighting it.’”

The crowd gasped once more.

“I didn't waste my afternoon crying,” I continued. “I forwarded her text straight to Martin with three words: Prepare the execution.”
