Chapter 17 - Public Reckoning

Grant gasped loudly from the plaintiff’s table.
On the screen, Charles Mercer continued speaking with absolute clarity.
“I am transferring fifty-two percent of my voting shares directly to my daughter-in-law, Evelyn Bennett Mercer,” Charles stated firmly. “I am doing this of my own free will, while possessing absolute mental clarity. I am doing this because my son, Grant, possesses neither the intellect nor the moral fortitude required to steward this company.”
Charles leaned closer to the camera, his expression darkening.
“Grant is weak, vain, and easily controlled by his own ego. If he is given full control, he will bankrupt Mercer Dominion and ruin thousands of employees. Evelyn is the true brain behind our success. She is the only person I trust with my life’s work.”
The video cut to black.
The courtroom fell into an eerie, suffocating silence.
Justice Miller looked down from her bench at Grant, her eyes filled with disgust and disdain.
“Mr. Mercer,” Justice Miller spoke, her voice booming off the walls. “This lawsuit is not only entirely meritless, but it borderlines on a fraudulent abuse of the judicial system.”
She slammed her gavel down hard.
“Case dismissed with prejudice! Furthermore, I am ordering Mr. Mercer to pay all of the defense’s legal fees, and I am referring his corporate accounting records directly to the United States Attorney’s Office for grand larceny investigation!”

Grant slumped forward onto his desk, burying his face in his hands as the reporters rushed out of the room to file their stories.
Evelyn stood up, buttoned her blazer, and walked out of the courtroom arm-in-arm with Julian, leaving her ex-husband to face the consequences of his own greed.
