Chapter 15 - Dinner with the Rival

That evening, the rain had cleared, leaving the Manhattan skyline glistening beneath a sea of stars.
Julian had booked the private rooftop terrace of an ultra-exclusive restaurant overlooking Central Park. Candles flickered softly on the linen table, casting a warm glow over Evelyn as she sipped a vintage Cabernet.
Across the table, Julian watched her with quiet intensity.
“A penny for your thoughts, Chairwoman,” he murmured softly.
Evelyn smiled, looking out at the glittering lights of the city below.
“I was just thinking about how strange life is,” she admitted. “Twenty-four hours ago, I was sitting in a salon preparing for a gala, thinking my biggest challenge was picking out a gown. Tonight, I run a $12 billion conglomerate.”
“You were always meant to run it, Evelyn,” Julian said, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table. “When I fought Mercer Dominion in the acquisition wars three years ago, I realized every brilliant maneuver, every defensive strategy, and every financial trap came from you. Grant was just the mouthpiece.”
Evelyn met his eyes, feeling a strange, intoxicating warmth in her chest.
“Why did you back me so quickly yesterday, Julian? $4.7 billion is a massive risk, even for you.”
Julian’s gaze softened, dropping to her lips before rising back to meet her eyes.
“It wasn't a risk, Evelyn. It was an investment in the most brilliant woman I’ve ever known.”

He reached across the table, his warm fingers lightly brushing against the back of her hand.
“And to be completely honest... I’ve been waiting years for a chance to stand beside you.”
