Chapter 6 - $4.7 Billion Execution

|

Grant stared at Chloe as if she had just stabbed him in the back.

“You texted her? Before the gala? You stupid, reckless—”

“Grant, I thought she’d just give up!” Chloe sobbed, backing away from him. “I didn't know she owned the company!”

Martin interrupted the chaotic drama over the speaker.

“Evelyn, our primary buyer is ready to execute the transaction immediately. They are offering a mix of cash and liquid equity. The total valuation of your majority stake comes to $4.7 billion.”

A massive wave of murmurs crashed through the ballroom. $4.7 billion. In a single transaction.

Grant looked as though he was going to vomit right onto the velvet carpet.

“Who is it?” Grant screamed at the phone. “Who is buying my father’s company?!”

Martin paused for a brief, dramatic beat.

“The buyer requested absolute anonymity until Mrs. Mercer officially signs the execution order.”

“Accept the offer, Martin,” I said firmly into the microphone.

“NO!” Grant shrieked, lunging forward to grab my phone.

I raised my arm high, pointing my index finger directly at his chest.

“Take one more step toward me, Grant, and three hundred high-profile witnesses will watch the police handcuff you for corporate intimidation and assault.”

He stopped dead in his tracks. Sweat was pouring down his forehead, ruining his slicked-back hair. For the first time in his pampered, privileged life, he was staring into an abyss of his own making.

“Evelyn... please,” he begged, his voice dropping into a desperate whimper. “Please don't do this. We can talk about this. We’re family.”

“Family?” I repeated, letting the word linger in the air. “You stood there while your mistress slapped me. You told me that if I defended myself, our marriage was over. You chose her.”

“I was angry! I wasn't thinking!”

“You were thinking perfectly clearly. You thought you had all the power. You thought I was just an obedient wife you could discard when a newer model came along.”

I looked down at my phone screen. A secure biometric prompt appeared from my banking app.

AUTHORIZE EQUITY TRANSFER: $4.700,000,000.

I pressed my thumb against the sensor.

A green checkmark flashed instantly.

TRANSACTION COMPLETE. CONTROLLING INTEREST TRANSFERRED.

I turned the phone around and held the glowing green screen up for Grant to see.

“It’s done,” I said.
