Chapter 8: The Winter of Justice

Adrian’s criminal trial officially began in the dead of winter. The media circus surrounding the courthouse was relentless, hungry for the details of the fallen titan's demise.

Evelyn did not attend the daily proceedings. She didn't need to. Her meticulously gathered evidence, combined with the catastrophic betrayal of his inner circle, had done the work for her.

Vanessa took the stand on the third day. Dressed in a drab, inexpensive suit that highlighted her fall from grace, she testified against Adrian for six grueling hours. She detailed the offshore accounts, the coercion, the blackmail, and the systematic abuse of power.

Sitting at the defense table, Adrian looked completely defeated. The sharp, impeccably tailored suits hung loosely on his frame. The arrogant smirk was gone. When faced with the insurmountable mountain of evidence, his high-priced defense team advised him to throw in the towel.

To avoid the humiliation of a prolonged public dismantling, Adrian Vale pleaded guilty to multiple counts of financial fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy. The judge set the sentencing date for two weeks later.

It was during that two-week window that Evelyn received a call from the District Attorney's office. Adrian had requested to see her. One final visit before he was transferred to a federal penitentiary for the next fifteen years.

At first, Evelyn almost refused. She owed him nothing. But as she stood in the grand hall of the newly renovated Blackthorn Sanctuary, listening to the sound of women laughing in the kitchen, she changed her mind.
