Chapter 28 - A Father's Peace

After the gala guests had left, Evelyn sat on the front porch with her father.
He looked older, his hair completely silver, but there was a deep, settling peace in his eyes that hadn't been there in years.
"I spent so long blaming myself for not seeing what Adrian was doing to you," her father confessed quietly, staring out at the empty driveway. "I thought I failed my job as a father."
Evelyn reached over and held his rough, warm hand.
"You didn't fail me, Dad. You gave me the foundation I needed to survive it. When I was in the dark, I remembered your strength. That’s what kept me going."

He squeezed her hand, a tear escaping his eye. "Look at what you've built, Evie. You took the worst thing that ever happened to you, and you turned it into a miracle."
"We built it together," she whispered.
