Chapter 7

Chapter 7: Breathing Life Into the Tomb
The transformation of Blackthorn Manor began immediately. Evelyn was on-site every day, overseeing the contractors as they stripped away the suffocating darkness Adrian had designed.
The grand marble hall changed first.
The heavy, oppressive curtains that blocked the sunlight were torn down. The dark, brooding velvet sofa—the very spot where Adrian used to sit and deliver his cruel ultimatums—was removed and burned. The heavy doors with deadbolts on the outside, designed to keep her locked in, were unhinged and replaced with open, welcoming archways.
But the massive, glittering crystal chandelier stayed.
Evelyn insisted on it.
One afternoon, as the construction dust settled, her father came to visit the progress. He looked up at the massive fixture, frowning. He knew the terrible memories that hung in the shadows of this room.
"Why keep it, Evie?" her father asked gently, placing a hand on her shoulder. "We can tear it down. Buy something new. Something that doesn't remind you of him."
Evelyn stood beneath the cascading crystals, remembering the night everything had ended—the night she had stood in this exact spot, her heart pounding, as the police broke through the doors. She didn't flinch at the memory.
"Because I want this room to witness something better," Evelyn said softly. "He bought this chandelier to show off his wealth and his power. I'm keeping it to illuminate the faces of the women he thought people like him could destroy."
And three months later, it did.
The first women arrived in the autumn. Some came with children clinging to their legs, their eyes wide with uncertainty. Some came with nothing but a single, battered suitcase. Some came with the exact same quiet, hollow expression Evelyn had once worn—the tragic face of someone who had survived solely by disappearing into themselves.
Evelyn met every single one of them at the grand oak doors.
She didn't greet them as a billionaire’s daughter, or as a wealthy benefactor. She certainly didn't greet them as Adrian Vale’s ex-wife.
She greeted them as proof.
Proof that the suffocating silence could end.

Proof that stolen power could return.
Proof that the person who tried to bury you could become the very evidence that saved you.
