Chapter 6 - A Loyal Friend

I lay on the floor, my breathing coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The pain in my legs was so intense it made my vision pulse with dark spots. Then, a new sound cut through the murmurs of the crowd—the frantic clicking of claws on hardwood.
Melissa walked into the center of the room, dragging Cooper by his thick leather leash.
My golden retriever struggled against her grip the moment his dark brown eyes found me on the floor. He had slept beside my bed for six years, followed me from room to room, and rested his head on my lap when I was sad. Now, he was desperately pulling against the leash, whining in distress, trying to reach me.
"Let him go," I wheezed, blood trickling down my chin.
Melissa didn't let go. Instead, she reached into her small designer clutch and produced a medical syringe filled with a cloudy yellowish liquid.
"No," I begged, trying to drag my broken body forward, the chain rattling against my ankle. "Please. Don't touch him. Do whatever you want to me, but don't hurt him!"

Melissa smiled sweetly, pinning Cooper’s scruff between her manicured fingers. She jammed the needle into his hind leg and depressed the plunger.
Within moments, Cooper’s frantic pulling stopped. His body began trembling violently. His warm, loving eyes glazed over, looking frightened, confused, and feral. When Brandon stepped forward and unclipped the leash, Cooper didn't run to comfort me. Driven mad by whatever chemical cocktail they had injected into his bloodstream, he rushed toward me and began violently tearing at the fabric of my dress, his teeth snapping dangerously close to my skin.
