Chapter 54 - The Phantom Signal

I walked into the yacht's interior command center, where Jax had set up a mobile hacking station. The ocean swayed gently beneath us, but the atmosphere inside the cabin was tense and electric.
"Jax, tell me everything you know about the Kurokawa Clan," I demanded, leaning over his glowing monitors.
"They are shadows, Boss," Jax replied, typing rapidly. "Led by an elusive figure known only as 'The Ghost.' No photographs, no known aliases. They control illegal weapons manufacturing, tech smuggling, and human intelligence across Asia. But Elias is right—they never step foot in our territory."
"Until last night," I corrected. "Why paint a dragon on a container of money and leave the cash behind?"
"It’s a declaration of war," Elias said, crossing his massive arms. "In their culture, it’s a warning. They are telling us that our wealth is meaningless if they decide to strike."
Before I could formulate a response, my personal satellite phone—the one only my inner circle had the number to—vibrated violently on the console table.
I stared at it. The caller ID displayed an encrypted, bouncing signal, bouncing off towers in Tokyo, Shanghai, and Manila.
"Jax, trace it," I ordered.
"I'm trying, but the routing protocol is insane. It’s jumping through twenty different proxy servers," Jax said, his fingers flying.
I picked up the phone and pressed answer.
"Emily Yates," I said, my voice cold and steady.
A digitally altered voice—deep, metallic, and completely devoid of emotion—spoke through the speaker.
"American Sovereign. You conquered Europe. You sit on a throne of blood. But you are arrogant to believe the world ends at the Atlantic."
"Who is this?" I demanded.
"I am the Ghost," the voice replied smoothly. "And you possess something that belongs to me. A proprietary quantum algorithm hidden inside the Genesis Code you took from Victoria Sterling."
My breath hitched slightly. The Genesis Code.
May you like
"You have forty-eight hours to hand over the algorithm, Miss Yates," the Ghost threatened quietly. "If you refuse, the Yakuza will not just attack your ports. We will burn your empire to ash. The clock is ticking."
The line went dead.
