Chapter 38 - Passing the Torch

|

That evening, a formal ceremony was held in the grand dining hall of the Yates Estate.

All five Capos—Sal Rossi, Marcus Vance, and the newly appointed leaders of the remaining sectors—sat around the long mahogany table. The room was filled with the warm glow of candlelight, expensive wine, and the scent of roasted meats.

Dad stood at the head of the table, holding a crystal glass of aged scotch.

"Forty years ago," Dad began, his gravelly voice echoing in the grand room, "I built this family from nothing. I drove trucks by day and fought street wars by night to secure a future for my bloodline. But a true leader knows when it is time to step down."

Dad turned to face me, taking off his heavy gold signet ring—the historical symbol of the Yates Patriarch.

"Tonight," Dad announced, his voice filled with pride, "I officially retire. From this moment on, Emily Yates is the sole, absolute Sovereign of the Yates Syndicate. Her word is law. Her enemies are our enemies. And her vision is our future."

The five Capos stood up simultaneously, raising their crystal glasses in unison.

"To the Sovereign!" they roared in unison. "Long live Emily Yates!"

I stood up slowly, feeling the strength in my legs, feeling the absolute loyalty of the men surrounding me. I took the golden signet ring from my father's hand and slipped it onto my middle finger. It fit perfectly.

"Thank you, gentlemen," I said, my voice quiet yet commanding respect. "Our family has weathered the storm. Now, we expand."

As the Capos cheered and toasted, Cooper let out a sharp, happy bark at my side. I smiled, petting his golden head, feeling the immense weight of the crown I had chosen to wear. I had traded the soft, fragile life of an innocent wife for the iron throne of an underworld queen—and I didn't regret a single second of it.
