Chapter 39 - The Reckoning

|

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in Springfield. The gardens of the Yates Estate were blooming with white lilies and red roses.

I sat on the sunlit patio, enjoying a quiet morning tea, reading the financial section of the Wall Street Journal. On the front page was a prominent article detailing the complete collapse of Brandon's former firm and the auctioning off of his remaining personal assets. Brandon himself was currently serving a thirty-year sentence in a federal penitentiary in Pennsylvania, completely stripped of his wealth, his reputation, and his freedom.

Arthur Vance was serving a twenty-year sentence in the same facility, his legal empire completely dismantled and absorbed into Vance Legal Holdings under his brother Marcus's loyal leadership.

My dark hair had grown back into a thick, gorgeous shoulder-length mane, shiny and full of life. The jagged cuts from Melissa's scissors were just a distant memory.

I took a sip of my Earl Grey tea, looking out over the pristine lawns where Cooper was chasing butterflies in the warm spring breeze.

Dad walked out onto the patio, dressed in a comfortable linen shirt, carrying a wooden tray with fresh pastries. "Morning, Sovereign," he teased with a warm smile.

"Good morning, retired truck driver," I laughed, putting down my newspaper.

"Everything is quiet across all five boroughs," Dad reported, sitting down opposite me. "The dock unions signed the new three-year contract, the casino revenues are up fifteen percent, and the Treasury Department just closed their file on our shipping logistics firm. We are completely untouchable."

"That's good to hear, Dad," I smiled, leaning back in my wicker chair. "It seems peace has finally arrived."

"You earned it, sweetheart," Dad said softly, looking at me with endless affection. "You took a nightmare and turned it into an empire."
