Chapter 36 - A Deal with the Devil

Brandon grabbed the gold pen with frantic, trembling fingers. He signed his name across every line of the document, smearing the black ink in his desperate hurry to finish.
"I signed it!" Brandon wept, pushing the paper back across the desk. "I signed everything! Please, Emily, let me go!"
I picked up the signed confession, inspecting the signature carefully before placing it inside my steel wall safe.
"Viktor," I called out.
The door opened, but it wasn't just Viktor who walked into the study.
Two federal agents dressed in dark suits stepped into the room, led by Special Agent Miller—the lead investigator of the FBI's Organized Crime Division.
Brandon gasped, shrinking back into his chair. "What is this?! You said you wouldn't kill me!"
"I promised I wouldn't kill you, Brandon," I said cold-bloodedly, taking a sip of my tea. "I never said I wouldn't hand your signed confession directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "Brandon Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate racketeering, and high-level wire fraud. You have the right to remain silent."
Brandon’s face twisted into an expression of absolute, unimaginable horror as the cuffs clicked around his wrists. "Emily! You lied to me! You tricked me!"
"You taught me how to play the game, Brandon," I replied smoothly, watching him get dragged out of my office. "You just forgot that I'm the one who owns the board."
Agent Miller lingered by my desk for a second, looking at me with deep, wary respect. "The United States government appreciates your full cooperation in this matter, Miss Yates. The case against Marcus Kane and your husband is ironclad."

"I am always happy to assist law enforcement, Agent Miller," I smiled thinly. "As long as law enforcement remembers who keeps the peace in this city."
Miller gave a polite nod, realizing that while he had locked up Kane and Brandon, he had just shaken hands with the most powerful syndicate ruler in the history of the state.
