Chapter 30 - The Execution of Mercy

My golden retriever launched forward like a golden missile, hurtling down the hallway and sinking his heavy jaws directly into the throat of the lead mercenary. The man screamed, dropping his weapon as Cooper brought him down to the floor.
Dad seized the distraction, swinging around his pillar and firing two quick shots into the chests of the remaining two hitmen. They fell instantly, their weapons clattering against the blood-slicked concrete.
Silence descended over the hallway, broken only by the heavy panting of my dog and the hiss of ruptured steam pipes.
Viktor and six Yates enforcers came charging up the rear stairwell, their weapons drawn, but the fight was already over. They froze when they saw Lorenzo's lifeless body lying on the floor, and me standing over him holding a smoking submachine gun.
"Sovereign!" Viktor gasped, rushing to my side. "Are you hurt?"
"I'm fine," I said, lowering the weapon and calling Cooper back to my side. "Check my father's shoulder."
Dad let out a weak laugh, leaning against the pillar as Viktor wrapped a medical bandage around his bleeding arm. Abraham looked at me with a mixture of terror and awe. The timid daughter who used to cry over bruised knees was gone. In her place stood a cold, calculating monster born from his own bloodline.
"Lorenzo was the last rat," Dad muttered, looking down at his former friend's body. "Kane has no leverage left."
"Not yet," I said, turning toward the elevator bank. "Kane sent these men because he's desperate. He's hiding at his private estate in Greenwich, waiting for news of our deaths."
"What are your orders, Sovereign?" Viktor asked, standing at attention.

I looked at my hands. They weren't shaking anymore. The fear that had ruled my life during my marriage to Brandon had vanished completely, replaced by an intoxicating sense of absolute control.
"Mobilize all five Capos," I commanded. "We're going to Greenwich. It's time to end the Kane bloodline once and for all."
