My first wedding anniversary was supposed to celebrate the happiest decision of my life. The house smelled of expensive catering and white lilies, a pristine setting for what I believed was a pristine marriage. Only hours earlier, Brandon had been unusually gentle, his touch lingering on my shoulders as he guided me through our spacious kitchen. The room began tilting violently, the marble countertops spinning out of my peripheral vision. My legs turned to lead, refusing to support my weight.

"Brandon?" I slurred, reaching out for the edge of the island.
He didn't look panicked. His face remained perfectly calm, an unsettling mask of pure control. The last thing I remembered before the suffocating darkness pulled me under was the cold, unyielding grip of Brandon’s arms catching me before I hit the hardwood floor.
