Chapter 33 - The Ghost of Melissa

Within twenty minutes, every single guest had signed over their corporate holdings to the Yates Foundation. They scrambled out the front doors like frightened rats, leaving behind millions of dollars in stock and complete economic control of the region.
I sat on the velvet sofa in the living room, watching Viktor collect the signed transfer documents.
"A masterstroke, Sovereign," Viktor said, bowing slightly. "You just acquired controlling stakes in the city's three largest development firms without firing a single shot."
"It's not about the money, Viktor," I said quietly. "It's about making sure no one in this city ever feels safe opposing my family again."
Suddenly, a disturbance sounded near the rear kitchen entrance!
A loud smash of breaking china was followed by the sharp yelp of an enforcer. A figure bolted out of the hallway, lunging directly toward me with a jagged, broken wine bottle!
It was Melissa.
She had escaped her guards during the chaotic exit of the guests, her hair wild, her red dress torn, her face twisted into a mask of pure, murderous madness.
"You ruined my life, you bitch!" Melissa screamed, lunging at my throat with the jagged glass!
I didn't even flinch. I didn't reach for my cane.
Cooper reacted instantly. The golden retriever leapt over the coffee table, his seventy-pound body slamming directly into Melissa's chest! The force of the impact sent her crashing violently onto the hardwood floor, the broken bottle shattering harmlessly against the rug.
Cooper pinned her shoulders to the ground, his massive jaws snapping inches from her face, his deep, terrifying growl rattling the room.
Melissa shrieked in absolute terror, freezing completely, staring into the dark eyes of the dog she had drugged weeks earlier.

I stood up slowly, relying on my cane, and walked over to where she lay pinned on the floor. I looked down at her with cold pity.
"You thought Cooper was just a pet, Melissa," I said quietly. "He's family. And in this house, family never forgets a debt."
