Chapter 7 - The Cabin

|

They hiked for hours in the freezing rain before reaching an old, abandoned hunting cabin hidden deep in the valley. Dominic kicked the rotting door open and swept the room with his gun before letting Sophia and Lily inside.

He locked the door, pulled the heavy shutters closed, and immediately collapsed against the wall, sliding down to the floor.

"Dominic!" Sophia gasped, rushing to his side. In the faint moonlight bleeding through the cracks, she saw a dark, spreading stain on his left side. He had taken a bullet to the ribs.

"I'm fine," he grunted, though his face was pale and sweating. "Check the cupboards. There should be a first aid kit and some dry blankets."

Sophia found the supplies, wrapped a shivering Lily in a heavy wool blanket, and then returned to Dominic. Her hands shook as she unbuttoned his ruined, bloody shirt.

"I've never done this before," she panicked, looking at the bullet wound.

"Just pour the alcohol on it and wrap it tight," he instructed, his breathing shallow. "I'll handle the rest later."

As she cleaned the wound, her hands brushed against his bare skin. Despite the cold, he was burning up. Dominic looked down at her, his dark eyes intense and unreadable.

"Why did you come after us?" she whispered, wrapping the bandage around his torso. "You could have escaped with your men."

Dominic reached up, his rough fingers tracing her jawline. "Because my life means nothing if you and the little one aren't safe. You belong to me now, Sophia."

She shivered, but this time, it wasn't from the cold.
