Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

The East Wing was a gilded prison. For three weeks, Sophia and Lily lived in a suite larger than any apartment Sophia had ever rented. Her maid’s uniform was replaced with silk dresses Dominic had ordered for her.
Every evening, Dominic came to the suite. At first, it was just to check security. Then, it became a ritual. He would bring a new toy or a book for Lily, sitting on the thick rug and letting the toddler show him her drawings.
"Does the big bad wolf ever get caught?" Lily asked one evening, holding up a picture book.
"Always," Dominic said softly, though his eyes darted to Sophia. "The wolf always makes a mistake."
Sophia stood by the fireplace, her arms crossed. "You shouldn't buy her so many things. She isn't used to it. I don't want her getting attached."
"To the toys?" Dominic asked, standing up and smoothing his tailored suit.
"To you," Sophia corrected.
Dominic stepped closer to her, the scent of expensive cologne and gunpowder clinging to him. "Maybe I'm the one getting attached, Sophia."
Her breath hitched. She looked up into his dark eyes, seeing a vulnerability she hadn't expected from a ruthless Mafia boss. But before he could lean in, the heavy oak door flew open.
Marco stood in the doorway, breathing hard, a file clutched in his hand.

"Boss," Marco said, his voice tight. "We found a leak. Someone inside the estate has been radioing Alessandro's men. They know exactly which room the girl is sleeping in."
Dominic’s expression instantly turned to ice. "Move them to the safehouse. Now."
