Chapter 5 - Flight in the Night

|

The black SUVs tore through the pouring rain, leaving the sprawling Moretti estate behind. Sophia held Lily tight to her chest in the backseat, sandwiched between Dominic and Marco.

"Where are we going?" Sophia whispered, terrified by the heavy rifles resting on the laps of the men in the front seats.

"Upstate," Dominic replied, his eyes fixed on the rearview mirror. "I have a fortified cabin in the Adirondacks. Only three people know about it."

Suddenly, the vehicle lurched violently. A deafening explosion ripped through the air, and the SUV ahead of them erupted into a ball of fire, flipping end over end.

"Ambush!" Marco roared. "Hold on!"

Their driver slammed on the brakes, spinning the heavy armored car to shield them from the incoming fire. Bullets hailed against the bulletproof glass, leaving white, spiderweb cracks across the windows.

"Get down!" Dominic yelled, throwing his entire body over Sophia and Lily, pinning them to the leather seats.

Outside, the night lit up with muzzle flashes. Marco kicked his door open, returning fire with an assault rifle. "There's too many of them, boss! It's a blockade!"

Dominic drew his weapon, his jaw set in a hard line. He looked down at Sophia, whose face was buried in his chest. "Listen to me," he said, his voice cutting through the gunfire. "When I open this door, you run to the tree line. Do not stop. Do not look back. I will find you."

"No!" Sophia cried, grabbing his lapel. "You'll be killed!"

"I'm the Don," he said, a grim smile touching his lips. "I don't die easy. Now go!"
