Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

|

"Mr. Moretti, please," Sophia begged, her voice raspy. "Let us leave. We won't say a word. I swear on my life, we’ll disappear."

They were in Dominic’s private office. The heavy mahogany doors were guarded by two armed men. Lily was asleep on the leather sofa, exhausted from the night's terror.

Dominic stood by the window, watching the rain batter the glass. "You can't leave, Sophia. My brother is out there. He knows your daughter saw him. He knows she ruined his coup. If you walk out those gates, you'll be dead before sunrise."

"But we are just staff!" she cried, tears spilling over her cheeks. "We have nothing to do with your family's wars."

"You do now," he said gently, turning to face her. "She saved my life. In my world, a debt of blood is absolute. You are under my protection."

"Protection?" Sophia laughed bitterly. "You mean captivity."

Dominic stepped closer, his imposing figure casting a shadow over her. He reached out, surprisingly gentle, and wiped a tear from her cheek with his thumb. Sophia stiffened but didn't pull away.

"I mean safety," he murmured. "You will be moved from the staff wing to the East Wing. You’ll have whatever you need. But you do not leave the house. Not until Alessandro is dead."

Sophia looked at her sleeping daughter, her heart breaking. She had tried so hard to keep Lily away from the darkness of this world, and now they were locked right in the center of it.

"Do you understand me, Sophia?" Dominic asked.

She swallowed hard, nodding slowly. "Yes, sir."
