Chapter 10 - The Commission

"A sit-down is a trap," Sophia argued later that evening. She stood in front of the map spread across the bunker's war room, watching Dominic strap on a shoulder holster. He was still pale, but the fire was back in his eyes.

"Of course it's a trap," Dominic replied calmly, checking his magazine. "But to refuse the Commission is to forfeit my title as Don. I have to go."

"He's going to kill you! He poisoned your wine, he shot at you—"

"And I will return the favor," Dominic interrupted, stepping into her personal space. He looked down into her panicked eyes. "I know how my brother thinks. He's arrogant. He believes he has the upper hand because he bought off half the capos."

"What if you don't come back?" she whispered, the fear cracking her voice.

Dominic gently cupped her face. "Marco will stay here with you and Lily. If I don't check in by midnight, Marco has a plane waiting to take you to Italy. You'll be given new identities. You'll be safe."

Tears welled in her eyes. She hadn't realized how much she had come to rely on him, to care for him. "Dominic..."

He leaned down and kissed her. It was not a gentle kiss; it was desperate, possessive, and filled with the promise of violence. Sophia kissed him back, gripping his shirt, losing herself in the moment.

When he finally pulled away, he rested his forehead against hers. "Wait for me," he whispered.

Then he turned and walked out the door, surrounded by his most lethal men, heading straight into the lion's den.
