Chapter 9 - The Premeditated Humiliation

|

“She deliberately planned that seating arrangement to provoke you,” Marisol said, carefully reviewing a printed text message exchange between Genevieve and Adrian. “Look here.”

The message was dated exactly four days before the wedding.

Genevieve: Seat Bianca directly beside you. Put Isla near the service doors in the back. If she makes a public scene, we easily frame her as unstable before the financial negotiations begin. If she leaves the wedding, even better. A silent exit always reads like guilt to the family.

Adrian: She won’t sign the condo deed if she feels cornered, Mom.

Genevieve: Then make her feel ashamed, Adrian. Not cornered. Shame works much faster.

I read the cruel words three times. Shame works much faster.

My hands began to shake violently against the glass table. Marisol gently reached out and turned the page over so I no longer had to look at it.

“I should have left him sooner,” I whispered, my voice breaking.

“No, Isla,” Marisol replied firmly, her eyes full of fierce compassion. “You should have been treated better sooner.”

It was an incredibly simple sentence, but it broke me far more than I expected it to. I had spent so long privately, coldly building an arsenal of evidence that I had entirely forgotten I was also a human being allowed to grieve the death of my marriage.

Marisol silently handed me a box of tissues without any further comment and continued working methodically while I slowly pulled myself back together.

By noon, Marisol had successfully filed a massive, emergency legal injunction. The order instantly froze all shared marital accounts, aggressively restricted Adrian’s physical and digital access to Hart House Interiors, and formally notified all my banks of suspected, ongoing fraudulent activity.

By one o’clock, a brilliant forensic accountant named Dorian Pike had arrived and began meticulously tracing the complex flow of money between my company, Bianca’s fake agency, Genevieve’s holding accounts, and Graham’s nervous lenders.

By three o’clock, every single member of my company staff received a strict legal hold notice, requiring the absolute preservation of all emails, invoices, project records, and any communications regarding Ravel Creative Strategy.
