Chapter 37 - Marisol’s Toast

|
The five-year anniversary of the Hartley Door Fund was celebrated not in a massive, rented gala hall, but on the sprawling, beautiful outdoor patio of my own home. It was an incredibly intimate, heavily guarded gathering of the core team, our most dedicated allies, and the brilliant women who had helped aggressively build the foundation from the ground up.
The warm evening air was filled with loud, joyous laughter. Elodie was actively showing off pictures of her new rescue dog to a group of lawyers, while Dorian was passionately debating federal tax law with a newly elected state senator who completely supported our massive legislative reforms.
Marisol tapped her elegant champagne glass with a silver fork, the sharp, clear ringing sound instantly silencing the lively crowd.
"Five years ago," Marisol began, her voice carrying beautifully across the quiet patio, "I watched my absolute best friend completely rebuild her entire life from the devastating wreckage of a deeply abusive marriage. I watched her aggressively fight for her own financial freedom when the entire legal system told her she was being entirely unreasonable."
She turned to look directly at me, her dark eyes shining with immense, unconditional pride.
"But she didn't just fight for herself," Marisol continued, raising her glass high. "She aggressively took the heavy, brutal lessons she learned in the dark and forcefully weaponized them for the light. She built an incredibly massive door, and then she brutally kicked it wide open so thousands of other women could finally walk completely free. To Hartley. The absolute bravest woman I have ever known."
"To Hartley!" the entire crowd echoed loudly, raising their glasses in perfect, beautiful unison.

I felt a massive, profound lump heavily form in my throat. I looked around the patio at the incredible, fiercely intelligent people who had dedicated their lives to this vital cause. I wasn't just surviving anymore; I was completely surrounded by an impenetrable, beautiful fortress of community, deeply rooted in absolute trust and mutual respect.
"Thank you," I whispered, raising my own glass, finally allowing myself to truly, completely celebrate the massive empire of healing we had successfully built.
