Chapter 16 - The Reckoning

Genevieve’s mouth tightened into a thin, angry line.
Adrian leaned forward across the table toward me. “Isla, before we begin any of this, I just want to say—”
“No,” I interrupted sharply.
He stopped, stunned.
“I am not here to listen to your speech, Adrian. I am only here for your signatures.”
Marisol connected her laptop to the large screen at the end of the room. The very first slide appeared in stark black and white: RAVEL CREATIVE STRATEGY — PAYMENT HISTORY.
Beneath the title was a damning, comprehensive timeline of fraudulent invoices, executive approvals, illicit deposits, and offshore transfers.
Then came the images of the duplicate invoices. The lavish travel receipts. The luxury hotel charges. The expensive car lease paid completely through a fake “brand mobility consultation” fee. The direct payment from Bianca to Genevieve’s personal bank account, brazenly labeled “G.A. arrangement.”
Then came the massive transfers from Genevieve directly to Graham’s angry lenders. The fraudulent loan applications listing my personal condo as projected collateral. The forged internal company memo falsely suggesting I had officially approved family asset integration.
Graham groaned loudly, putting his head in his hands. “Genevieve, my god.”
“Do not start with me,” she snapped at her husband.
Marisol continued relentlessly. She played the audio of Adrian’s frantic lobby call. Then Genevieve’s angry threat on the phone. And finally, the damning video from Elodie’s photographer.
On the large screen, Genevieve laughed maliciously beside my empty chair.
“If she screams, we call her abusive. If she leaves, we call her guilty. Any outcome works.”
In the windowless conference room, absolutely no one breathed.
Adrian closed his eyes tightly in shame.
Genevieve stared at the screen with an expression I had never seen on her face before. It wasn't guilt. It wasn't remorse. It was cold calculation, violently interrupted by genuine surprise that she had been caught.
Marisol paused the video. “That specific clip alone creates massive, significant risk for intentional infliction of emotional distress, multiple coercive control claims, reputational harm, and clear evidence of premeditated financial pressure tied directly to marital asset manipulation. Combined with the overwhelming fraud evidence, a jury will find it very persuasive.”
Genevieve turned furiously to Adrian. “You explicitly told me there were no cameras running!”
Adrian looked at his mother in sheer disbelief. “That is what you’re upset about right now?”

“It was your sister’s private wedding reception! Who secretly records private family discussions?”
“Elodie’s photographer,” I answered calmly. “Apparently, quite well.”
