Chapter 30 - The Press Conference

|

The highly anticipated press conference was originally scheduled merely to announce the massive statewide expansion of the Hartley Door Fund, but the overwhelming presence of news cameras made it feel like a coronation. We stood behind a sturdy wooden podium in the grand hall of the state capitol building. Survivors, politicians who had finally championed our cause, and our entire dedicated staff filled the room.

I adjusted the microphone, looking out at the flashing cameras and the sea of expectant faces.

"Three years ago, I fundamentally believed that financial abuse was a completely private shame," I began, my voice incredibly clear and echoing loudly off the marble walls. "I believed that if I just worked harder, compromised more, and stayed quietly in the background, the crushing manipulation would eventually stop. I was entirely wrong."

Marisol squeezed my hand supportively from just out of frame.

"Financial coercion thrives exclusively in the dark," I continued, making direct eye contact with the lead reporters. "It thrives on the enforced silence of victims who are falsely told they are crazy, incompetent, or completely dependent. The Hartley Door Fund was built to aggressively turn on the lights. Today, I am incredibly proud to announce that we are expanding our forensic accounting and legal aid services to all fifty states."

The room erupted into massive, sustained applause. Elodie wiped a tear from her eye, and Dorian simply nodded with fierce professional pride.

"Ms. Hartley!" a loud reporter shouted over the din. "There have been recent, highly malicious rumors online questioning the absolute integrity of your fund. Do you have any comment on the smear campaign?"

I smiled perfectly, completely unfazed by the predictable question.

"Those fabricated rumors were heavily funded by a desperately insecure individual who recently realized his own financial fraud is about to be completely exposed by his current investors," I stated calmly, delivering the lethal blow with elegant precision. "Our audited financials are completely public. Our absolute integrity is beyond reproach. We do not waste our time engaging with digital ghosts; we are entirely focused on rescuing real women from very real monsters. Thank you all for coming."

I stepped away from the podium, leaving the desperate reporters clamoring for more. The narrative was officially, permanently mine.
