Chapter 23 - The Ghost in the Ledger

|

The free financial literacy clinic we hosted every second Thursday of the month had quickly become a desperate lifeline for women in the city. We rented a large community hall, set up rows of folding tables, and provided free childcare so mothers could actually focus entirely on their complicated documents. Dorian Pike stood confidently at the front of the crowded room, projecting a massive, heavily redacted spreadsheet onto the white wall, patiently explaining the subtle art of finding hidden offshore bank transfers.

I was walking quietly through the aisles, handing out thick informational binders, when a woman in a tailored but distinctly outdated beige trench coat grabbed my wrist. Her grip was shockingly desperate, her knuckles completely white.

"I need to speak with you," she whispered frantically, her terrified eyes darting nervously toward the main entrance of the hall. "Privately. Please, right now."

I led her immediately into a small adjacent supply closet, clicking the lock shut and turning on the dim overhead fluorescent light. The woman took a shaky, ragged breath, pulling a crumpled stack of bank statements from her oversized leather purse.

"My name is Beatrice," she said, her voice trembling violently. "My husband is a prominent state senator. If he finds out I am here, he will completely destroy me. He has completely cut off my access to our primary checking accounts. I have an allowance of exactly fifty dollars a week. Fifty dollars. To feed our three teenage children."

I looked closely at the bank statements. They were heavily redacted, clearly altered before they were given to her. The financial manipulation was so blatantly obvious it made my stomach turn. It was the exact same gaslighting tactic Adrian had used during our disastrous second year of marriage.

"Beatrice, you are completely safe here," I assured her, keeping my voice incredibly calm and grounded. "We deal with arrogant men who hide behind power all the time. Their political titles do not impress us in the slightest."

"He said no judge in this entire state would ever side with a crazy housewife over a highly respected politician," she sobbed, burying her tear-stained face in her hands.

"They always say that," I replied, gently placing a reassuring hand on her shaking shoulder. "Because their entire fragile power structure relies exclusively on you believing them. We are going to get Dorian to aggressively audit these statements. We are going to find the missing funds. And then, we are going to introduce your husband to the terrifying reality of forensic accounting."
