Chapter 17 - The Signatures

Graham lifted his head from his hands, his voice trembling. “We should sign whatever they want.”
Genevieve rounded on him, her eyes blazing. “Don’t be weak, Graham!”
He looked at his wife, a lifetime of exhaustion evident in his eyes. “Weak? You systematically drained our accounts, involved our son in fraud, humiliated his wife in public, and used stolen company funds to pay for our daughter’s wedding. I think 'weakness' is the absolute smallest word left for us.”
For a brief, startling moment, the entire dynamic of the room shifted. Graham had always been a quiet, passive man, the kind who easily disappeared behind Genevieve’s overwhelming volume. Hearing him speak so plainly and accusingly felt almost unnatural. Genevieve looked as if he had physically slapped her across the face.
Adrian leaned forward again, desperately trying to redirect the room back toward emotion and manipulation.
“Isla, please,” Adrian begged, tears filling his eyes. “I love you. I was just lost. Bianca meant absolutely nothing to me. The money got way out of control. My mother made everything worse, but you and I can still—”
“No,” I said again, my voice softer this time, but infinitely heavier. “You do not genuinely love a woman when you let your mother seat your mistress beside you at a family table specifically to break her spirit. You do not love a woman when you knowingly approve fake invoices to pay for your affair. You do not love a woman when you call her mentally unstable for simply noticing your theft.”
His face crumpled in genuine despair. “I made mistakes, Isla.”
“No, Adrian. You made calculated choices, and you simply hoped I would mistake them for confusion.”
Marisol smoothly slid the massive settlement agreement across the polished table.
“The offer is incredibly straightforward,” Marisol stated coldly. “Mr. Arden completely relinquishes all legal claim to Hart House Interiors and any affiliated properties. He signs a formal admission of unauthorized financial conduct for civil purposes. All funds diverted through Ravel Creative Strategy are to be repaid immediately through your asset liquidation and structured restitution.”
She turned to Graham and Genevieve.
“Mr. and Mrs. Arden will cooperate fully with the ongoing forensic accounting review. Graham Arden will permanently resolve his private loans without any further reference to Ms. Hartley’s personal assets. Genevieve Arden formally agrees to a strict no-contact clause and waives any claim, implied or direct, to the Toronto condominium or any other Hartley trust properties. In exchange for this, Ms. Hartley reserves the right to pursue criminal referral, but will delay formal submission to the authorities pending your full compliance.”

Genevieve let out a harsh, bitter laugh. “You honestly expect me to sign away my dignity on a piece of paper?”
I looked her dead in the eye. “You eagerly spent my money trying to steal my peace, Genevieve. Your dignity is no longer on the table.”
