Chapter 36 - The Unexpected Ally

The incredibly loud, chaotic nature of our rapid expansion meant I rarely had time for unexpected walk-in appointments. But when the receptionist buzzed my office on a highly stressful Wednesday afternoon to announce that a prominent, deeply conservative family court judge was sitting in the lobby demanding to see me, I immediately cleared my schedule. Judge Harrison had previously dismissed several of our early financial abuse cases, aggressively claiming they were merely "typical marital disputes."
I walked into the lobby, fully preparing myself for a highly tense, hostile confrontation.
"Judge Harrison," I said cautiously, extending a highly professional hand. "To what do I owe the absolute honor of this visit?"
He stood up slowly, completely ignoring my extended hand. He looked incredibly aged, deeply exhausted, and fundamentally broken.
"My daughter," he said, his deep voice cracking painfully with raw, unhidden emotion. "My youngest daughter just fled her house in the middle of the night. Her husband has secretly drained her entire trust fund, maxed out massive credit cards in her name, and is aggressively threatening to completely destroy her if she files for divorce. He told her she was totally crazy."
The heavy, terrible irony of the situation hung thickly in the air, but I felt absolutely no satisfaction. I only felt a profound, heavy sadness that the toxic cycle had claimed another victim.
"Please, come into my office," I said gently, completely dropping all my defensive armor and leading him inside.
He sat heavily in the chair across from my desk, burying his face completely in his shaking hands. "I aggressively punished so many women in my courtroom who were begging for help with this exact same thing. I thought they were just being vindictive. I had absolutely no idea how terrifying the financial trap actually was until I saw it completely destroy my own child."

"Guilt will not freeze his accounts, Judge," I said softly, sliding a fresh legal intake form toward him. "But our forensic accountants absolutely will. We will completely protect your daughter. But in exchange, I expect you to completely fundamentally change how you rule on every single financial coercion case that ever enters your courtroom."
"You have my absolute word," he whispered fiercely. "Just please, save my little girl."
