Chapter 2 - The Ballroom Freezes

|

The massive ballroom did not completely stop, but the atmosphere fundamentally changed. The string quartet continued playing. Silver forks touched china plates. Someone laughed entirely too loudly at a table near the tall windows.

Elodie Arden, the young bride, froze halfway between two guests, her expensive bouquet still clutched tightly in her hand. Her new husband looked momentarily confused, then deeply frightened, as if he had just realized his lavish wedding reception had suddenly become the main stage for something much uglier than typical family tension.

My husband, Adrian Arden, stood up so abruptly that his heavy chair hit the leg of the table with a loud thud.

“Isla,” Adrian said, his face flushing a deep, embarrassed red. “Please. Let me explain.”

There are specific moments in life when the body profoundly understands humiliation long before the conscious mind can accurately name it. My hands went instantly cold. My throat tightened as if a hand were wrapped around it. I could physically feel two hundred pairs of eyes measuring me, silently deciding whether I would become their evening’s entertainment.

Would I be the foolish wife? The jealous, hysterical wife? The dramatic, unstable wife ruining another woman’s perfect wedding simply because she could not keep control of her emotions?

Genevieve desperately wanted that. I could see it clearly in the way she leaned slightly toward me, waiting eagerly for the explosion.

Bianca wanted it too. She lifted her champagne glass with a delicate, mocking smile and said, “Hello, Isla. We were wondering when you’d finally arrive.”

I looked intently at my husband. He was not looking at me with love, or even apology. He was looking at me with pure fear. But it was not fear that I was deeply hurt; it was a selfish, panicked fear that I might expose his lies before he could manage the public narrative.

That small, distinct realization cut deeper than any affair ever could.
