Chapter 28 - The Smear Campaign

|

The brutal retaliation didn't come in the form of a legal letter this time; it arrived silently, spreading like a toxic digital virus across social media and local business forums. I arrived at the office on a Thursday morning to find Marisol and Dorian standing over a computer monitor, their faces tight with deep, unmistakable anger. The air in the room felt incredibly heavy.

"Don't look at it," Marisol ordered fiercely the moment I stepped through the door, moving her body to physically block the screen.

"What happened?" I demanded, dropping my briefcase and stepping around her to see the monitor.

A highly coordinated, vicious smear campaign had been launched overnight. Anonymous blogs and fake social media accounts were actively publishing entirely fabricated stories about my past. They falsely claimed I had stolen money from Adrian, that the Hartley Door Fund was a massive tax evasion scheme, and that I was intentionally brainwashing vulnerable women to destroy successful men.

"It's Adrian," I said, my voice eerily calm despite the massive surge of adrenaline flooding my system. "He hired a crisis PR firm or a digital troll farm. This is way too coordinated for him to do alone."

"We are actively drafting a massive defamation lawsuit right now," Dorian said, his jaw clenched so tightly I thought his teeth might break. "We will subpoena the IP addresses. We will drag whoever published this into federal court."

"No," I said, stepping back from the toxic screen, refusing to let the fabricated lies penetrate my peace.

"What do you mean, no?" Marisol asked, completely exasperated. "You cannot just let them actively destroy your hard-earned reputation, Hartley!"

"Fighting them in the mud is exactly what Adrian desperately wants," I explained, my mind working with absolute, crystal clarity. "He wants me to aggressively react. He wants me to waste the Fund's vital resources on a petty legal battle to defend my own honor. If we focus on this, we aren't focusing on the fifty women who desperately need us right now."

"So we do absolutely nothing?" Dorian asked in disbelief.

"We do exactly what we always do," I replied, turning to face them both. "We loudly publish our audited financial records. We post the verified success stories of the clients who are willing to speak. We let our incredibly transparent work speak for itself. Sunlight is the best possible disinfectant. Let him waste his money on trolls; we are going to keep opening doors."
