Chapter 3 - The Weight of Silence

I had spent years actively telling myself that Adrian was simply weak under pressure, not intentionally cruel. I reasoned that he avoided conflict only because his mother violently dominated the family, not because he actively enjoyed the benefits of my silence and compliance.
But as he stood there between his mistress and his wife, asking me with his pleading eyes to quietly protect him from the consequences of what he had actively done, I finally understood the truth. Weakness inevitably becomes a form of cruelty when it repeatedly, consciously chooses to protect the person doing harm.
Genevieve stepped closer to me. The scent of her signature perfume, expensive and overwhelmingly powdery, turned my stomach.
“A smart wife,” Genevieve whispered maliciously, leaning in, “knows exactly how to keep her mouth shut when the family reputation is at stake.”
I almost laughed out loud. Family reputation.
In the Arden family, that specific phrase had always been used like a heavy velvet curtain to cover everything ugly and rotting. Graham Arden’s disastrous, failed investments. Genevieve’s mounting private debts hidden behind flashy charity luncheons. Adrian’s sudden, unexplained transfers from my company’s operating accounts. Bianca’s miraculous rise from an unknown, struggling image consultant to a “strategic branding partner” who submitted invoices larger than my senior designers’ annual salaries.
Every single time I questioned something, I was immediately told I was too tired, too suspicious, too independent, too sharp, and simply not soft enough to understand the delicate workings of old families. Every time I tried to defend myself, Genevieve called my behavior vulgar. Every time I explicitly asked Adrian for financial clarity, he kissed my forehead patronizingly and said, “Don’t let the numbers make you cold, Isla.”

I did not scream. I did not cry. I did not slap him, and I did not throw my drink in his face.
I simply looked directly at Genevieve and said, “How kind of you to clarify the seating arrangement.”
