Chapter 15 - Neutralized

|

Three days later, Bianca’s terrified attorney officially contacted Marisol, desperately offering full cooperation in exchange for reduced legal exposure.

She had mountains of documents. Private emails. Incriminating voice messages.

She claimed that Genevieve had exclusively designed the fraudulent financial structure and that Adrian had willingly approved every transfer. She claimed that Graham fully knew the collateral projections he used for his loans were entirely fraudulent. She claimed she had been explicitly promised a formal, public relationship with Adrian immediately after I was “financially neutralized.”

That specific phrase, like so many others they used, entered the official legal file.

Financially neutralized.

Not divorced. Not amicably separated. Not even ruined. Neutralized.

Sometimes, the language people choose reveals the exact, terrifying distance between a person’s face and their soul.

The final settlement meeting took place exactly nine days after the disastrous wedding reception. It was held in a stark, windowless conference room at Marisol’s high-end law firm.

It was absolutely not elegant. There were no white roses, no live string music, no vintage champagne, and no family crest embroidered on linen napkins. There were just harsh fluorescent lights, a long polished table, pitchers of ice water, yellow legal pads, open laptops, massive evidence binders, and the low, constant hum of the air conditioning.

I preferred it exactly that way. Beauty had been used far too often to soften their rot.

Adrian arrived first, wearing the exact same navy suit he always wore when he desperately wanted to look sincere and trustworthy. The trick no longer worked. His skin was a sickly gray, his eyes were dark and hollow from profound sleeplessness, and his wedding ring was conspicuously gone.

Graham came in next, his shoulders completely collapsed, his aristocratic dignity leaking out of him like air from a punctured tire.

Genevieve entered last, wearing oversized dark sunglasses, despite the fact that the room had absolutely no windows. She carried her expensive designer bag in both hands, clutching it to her chest like a shield.

Bianca did not attend. She had wisely chosen survival and sent boxes of incriminating documents instead.

Genevieve removed her sunglasses slowly, looking at me across the table as if I were the true embarrassment in the room.

“This entire, dramatic situation is completely unnecessary and deeply disrespectful to our family status,” Genevieve announced.

Marisol did not even look up from her laptop screen. “Mrs. Arden, your family status is not a recognized legal defense.”
