Chapter 27 - Elodie’s Breakthrough

|
Elodie was usually the quietest presence in the office, a meticulous, highly organized woman who preferred the safety of spreadsheets over the chaos of direct client interaction. She had come to us a year ago, barely able to make eye contact, slowly healing from a deeply manipulative family dynamic that had drained her savings to zero. Today, however, she burst into my office without even knocking, her face flushed with unprecedented adrenaline.
"I found it," Elodie declared, slamming a thick, heavily highlighted manila folder onto my desk. "I actually found the missing link."
I looked up from my laptop, completely startled by her sudden burst of intense energy.
"Found what, Elodie?" I asked, pushing my laptop aside to give her my full, undivided attention.
"In the Peterson case," she explained rapidly, pulling out a series of highly complex banking printouts. "Mr. Peterson claimed his consulting business went completely bankrupt, leaving his wife with absolutely nothing in the divorce settlement. Dorian couldn't find where the liquid cash went because he was looking for standard offshore accounts or shell companies."
"And what were you looking for?" I asked, genuinely intrigued.
"Cryptocurrency," Elodie smiled proudly, pointing to a tiny, seemingly insignificant recurring digital charge on the primary credit card. "He wasn't transferring large sums of cash. He was buying high-end gaming servers. I thought it was just an expensive hobby. But I cross-referenced the server IP addresses with public blockchain ledgers. He isn't gaming. He is aggressively mining crypto, effectively converting all their marital assets into untraceable digital currency."
I stared at the heavily highlighted documents, absolutely stunned by her brilliant, unconventional deduction. It was a sophisticated, modern form of financial abuse that even Dorian had completely missed.
"Elodie, this is absolutely incredible work," I said, a massive smile breaking across my face. "You just handed Mrs. Peterson the exact key to reclaim her entire life."

"I spent all weekend tracking the digital wallet transfers," Elodie admitted, her voice trembling slightly with fierce pride. "When I realized what he was doing, I felt so incredibly angry. He thought he was so much smarter than everyone else."
"They always do," I reminded her, standing up and pulling her into a tight, celebratory hug. "But they never account for the fact that we are incredibly persistent. Call Dorian immediately. We are going to subpoena those digital wallets before Mr. Peterson even realizes we’ve breached his fortress."
