Chapter 7 - The Uncut Key|

Alexander stared at the tiny brass keyhole.
"She left a secondary lock," he muttered, his voice laced with frustration. "Where is the key, Marcus?"
"I've never seen a key for that pedestal, Boss," Marcus replied, examining the vault interior. "We searched Sarah's estate top to bottom eight years ago. There was no key."
Sofie, still held tightly in Elena's arms, pointed a tiny finger toward the desk across the room.
"Key in the wooden bird," Sofie said simply.
Everyone in the room went dead silent.
Alexander turned slowly to look at his massive mahogany desk. Sitting on the far corner of the desk was an antique, hand-carved wooden falcon—a decorative piece that had belonged to his father, which Alexander had kept in his office for over a decade.
"What did you say?" Alexander asked, stepping toward the child.
"The wooden bird," Sofie repeated, twisting her small fingers in her mother's shirt. "The lady in the park told me. She said if I see the wooden bird, the key is in his tummy."
Elena gasped, staring at her daughter in absolute horror. "Sofie... what lady? When did you speak to a lady in the park?"
"The lady with the blue coat," Sofie babbled innocently. "She gave me the green ring at the park playground two weeks ago. She said it was a magic ring for the big shiny door."
Elena felt the room spin around her.
The laundromat story had been a cover—not by Elena, but by a stranger who had approached her three-year-old daughter at the neighborhood park while Elena had been distracted packing up their picnic blanket.
