Chapter 6 - The Laundromat Box|

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"I found it!" Elena stammered, her voice shaking. "I swear to God, I found it!"

"Where?" Alexander growled, taking a step closer.

"In the lost-and-found box at the laundromat on 4th Street!" Elena sobbed. "Six months ago! It was sitting in an old cardboard box with orphan socks and cheap plastic toys! Sofie liked the green color, so the owner said I could take it!"

Alexander stared at her, scanning her face for any sign of a lie. Elena was a widow, living in a studio apartment in Queens, working two cleaning jobs to survive. She didn't have the poise, the wealth, or the cunning of an international thief.

"Who left the box?" Marcus asked, stepping up beside Alexander.

"I don't know!" Elena wept. "People leave things there all the time! Old clothes, broken jewelry... please, Mr. Carter, we don't know anything about your sister! Just let us go!"

Alexander ignored her plea. He walked over to the vault, reached inside, and lifted the glass case covering the hand-stitched leather notebook.

He flipped open the yellowed pages.

The pages were covered in Sarah’s neat, elegant handwriting—schematics, financial codes, and private journal entries detailing the construction of Carter Tower.

On the very last page, written in dark red ink, were three sentences:

If Alexander opens this vault, it means he has successfully stolen my life work.

If anyone else opens it, it means the magnetic ring has found its way home.

Check the floorboards beneath the swan.

Alexander’s eyes narrowed. He carefully lifted the heavy silver swan music box from its pedestal.

Beneath the velvet base of the pedestal was a tiny brass keyhole.
