Chapter 1 - The Incident|

The penthouse smelled like money—cut flowers, cold marble, and cologne that cost more than Elena’s rent. She had learned to breathe through it.
She was on her knees at the edge of the room, working a stain out of the pale rug beneath a leather chair, when her daughter’s voice cut across the office.
"Nobody can open this? Not even me?"
The room changed instantly. It was that particular silence that comes when a child says something adults find funny.
Sofie stood beside the vault—three years old, lost inside a T-shirt two sizes too big, her sneakers scuffed gray at the toes. The vault rose behind her like a cliff face. Brushed titanium. Seamless. Taller than any door the child had ever seen.
A dozen men in suits turned. Then they laughed.
Elena’s hands went cold around the mop handle. She had brought Sofie because the sitter had canceled at the last minute and the shift could not be missed—because missing one shift meant missing a week of groceries, and Sofie had never learned to sleep in a room without her mother’s voice. She had prayed her daughter would sit quietly in the corner until six o'clock.
Instead, Sofie had become the entertainment.
Alexander Carter leaned against the edge of his desk, arms folded, watching the child the way a man watches a coin land. He was tall, silver at the temples, immaculate—the kind of man who had never once in his life been told to wait.
"Go ahead," Alexander said, gesturing toward the vault with a dismissive wave of his hand. "Open it, and one hundred million dollars is yours."
The laughter came back, louder this time. Richard Blake, seated near the floor-to-ceiling windows, nearly choked on his bourbon. "She’s three, Alexander," he chuckled, wiping his mouth with a linen napkin. "She’s three."
Elena was already moving, her mop abandoned, her cheeks burning with embarrassment. "Mr. Carter, please. She doesn't understand. We'll leave right now."

Alexander’s smile faded instantly. He turned his head slowly, the way heavy machinery turns, and fixed his icy blue gaze on her.
"Did I ask you to speak?" Alexander asked softly.
